About Luo Lab

Research in the Luo Lab focuses on the evolutionary and ecological mechanisms giving rise to the genetic diversity in ocean bacteria and archaea. We use genomic and bioinformatic approaches to investigate the role of selection, drift, mutation, and recombination in assembling genetic diversity within and between lineages.

Ongoing researches highlight initiating the one thousand marine Roseobacter sequencing project to understand the genomic diversity of both cultured and uncultivated lineages inhabiting typical marine environments, and emphasize the impact of various environmental factors (phytoplankton, oxygen, light, temperature, salinity, nutrient availability) on the genome evolution of major marine bacterial and archaeal lineages.
